Not every stall begins under the hood. A weak battery, corroded battery terminals, poor ground connection, or failing alternator can reduce voltage to the vehicle's electronic systems. If the dashboard lights dim, accessories act erratically, or the vehicle stalls and then struggles to restart, the charging system should be tested.

Automatic transmission issues can also make a vehicle stall when coming to a stop. A torque converter clutch that does not release properly may feel similar to stopping a manual-transmission vehicle without pressing the clutch. This often shows up as a stall when braking to a stop, while the engine may idle normally in Park or Neutral.
